Reading Specialists
The reading specialists at St. Louis Charter School work hard to enrich and improve the “literacy world” of our students. Six reading specialists work with students of all ages mainly in small group settings to give more individualized instruction. By learning in smaller groups, the students are better able to build their reading knowledge and skill in the five main areas of reading – phonological awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. Focus is also given to assist students in becoming stronger writers and to realize the important connection between reading and writing. Some reading specialists devote a portion of their day to teach middle school elective classes including humanities and reading. Reading specialists also lead enrichment groups to study challenging vocabulary and perform reader’s theatre plays. With our support, we strive to deepen our student's understanding but mostly our goal is to grow their love of reading and writing! One Hundred Reading Ideas
Math SpecialistsSLCS provides additional support in the area of mathematics through our math specialists. Working with grades K-5, math specialists pull out students in small groups to offer additional support in the areas covered by the Missouri Grade Level Expectations. Our math specialists push into first and second grades during specials time. During this time, students are able to have fun playing games while learning new math strategies. Math is also offered as an elective for students in grades 6-8. |

ELL
Students entering St. Louis Charter School represent many nationalities and cultures. Some of these students arrive with limited proficiency in the English language. A supplemental program is offered to help these students become successful in the regular classroom. SLCS provides a language acquisition program designed to teach English language learners social and academic skills as well as cultural aspects of the English language necessary to succeed in the academic environment.
The Learning Center
The Learning Center (TLC) provides a continuum of special education services for students requiring additional support. A group of highly qualified teachers assist students within the regular classroom setting and in individual/small group pull-out classes helping to give them the tools and support they need to succeed.
