Sixth Grade
Welcome to Sixth Grade!
Sixth grade is the first official year in middle school at SLCS! We are committed to offering a lot of support to our new sixth graders to help them through the transition. Our students begin switching classes for each subject area, they have lockers for their personal belongings and they have various electives to replace their “specials” from the previous grades.
In Social Studies, our students learn about ancient world cultures. They will learn about Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Rome, Greece, The Middle Ages, and Mayas, Incas and Aztecs. The focus of this year and the upcoming year is for students to learn how each of these civilizations have impacted our society today.
In math, students will begin by reviewing concepts from previous years and they also get the opportunity to learn brand new concepts. It’s extremely important for our new sixth graders to know their multiplication and division facts. We would love for new sixth graders to practice theses over the summer!
We use the writing workshop model in writing class. The students are exposed to various types of writing and they focus on using all of the steps of the writing process in order to become better writers.
In reading, students are evaluated at the beginning of the school year and again later during the school year. Not only will students work to improve their reading skills, they also work on several fun projects throughout the year. One major part of their grade is reading each night and documenting it in their planner. Parents must sign this daily in order to earn credit for this daily homework assignment.
In science class, not only do our students learn new concepts, but they also get the opportunity to apply and use what they learned in “hands-on” labs throughout the school year. Lab safety and appropriate behavior are modeled and required in order to participate. |
