Message From the Head of School
SLCS Families,
Happy 2012, I hope you were able to ring in the new year with family and friends around you. The excitement of a new year tends to bring personal resolutions not only for us adults, but for the kids as well. Only one week into January and I am hearing many SLCS kids talk about their goals already in the works... lots of buzzing about how this is going to be a great year. As a school, we are moving from resolutions to results as we are only 11 weeks from the MAP test and a mere 20 weeks away from the end of the school year!As we continue to strive towards all of our sudents reaching 80% mastery on benchmark tests we have been supporting that goal with intervention days. Twice a month we host school-wide intervention days. Students are grouped by math benchmark results and are given more targeted and individualized instruction. Each group is given up to 90 minutes of uninterrupted intervention and they stay with that group until progress is made. We are pleased with this new initiative and are excited about some of the growth we are seeing in our students! In the character education arena, we continue to network and share best practices with other schools throughout the United States. I just learned a group from a charter school in North Carolina will be visiting our school in the coming months to learn about our award winning practices. Two of our administrators; Rachel Miles and Janice Denigan just graduated from the Leadership Academy in Character Education and two of our Teacher Leaders; Julie Leftridge and Glynn Doyle will start the Leadership Academy next week. In addition, Derek Davenport, Dr. Mike Schrimpf and myself are serving as a review committee for the state school of character application process. We will be busy as ever during the upcoming months, but with focus of providing our students a great learning environment. Stay warm out there!
Respectfully,
Julie Frugo

Peace Rally Respect, Responsibility, Caring
SLCS is focused on integrating our core ethical values of respect, responsibility and caring into everything we do. After our peace rally held on September 28th, students participated in a team building treasure hunt event based on our core values. Parents and community members were invited to come up and join in the fun; and students were excited to tell their families what they learned when they got home that day! The rally started at 9:00 AM and lasted about 30 minutes. There were some amazing skits performed by teachers and staff and the new members of the Tight 20 and Teeny 10 were announced. Congratulations to the newest members! The treasure hunt followed the rally and ended by 11:00 AM. From there students and staff processed the day in class meetings and ate lunch together. It was a great day of character building!
