Message From the Head of School
SLCS Families,
The 2011-2012 school year continues to fly by! It looks like we may be in the clear of snow days since spring break is right aroung the corner. Before we close up shop for spring break we have our conferences to host. As always, this is a great time to talk with the teachers, hear about your individual child's progress and to take part in goal setting for the remainder of the school year. In addition to the usual conference agenda, we will be surveying families about our bus services. The leadership team has been spending a considerable amount of time looking at bus data, including discipline records and parent phone call logs for this year. We have received teacher input about how (postive or negative) the current bus service impacts their instruction and classroom climate. Now we would like to collect some input from our families. We have put together an online survey that we encourage you to take while you are up at the school for conferences.
As we enter into the last trimester there are many things to prepare for, including MAP testing. Teachers and students have been working hard for months getting ready to test. Although there seems to be an extra element of pressure hovering around testing time, we are trying to keep the balance with the students so they may reach high expectations, but do not stress out. Most of you have been through this already as your children have been testing for years, but for those of you going through this for the first time you will find links on the NEWS page under the MAP Testing Information header to help your children do their best.
Our MAP testing calendar is as follows: April 2nd-13th is the testing window for general education classes, April 2nd-19th is testing window for special education classes and April 16th-19th are dates dedicated to any make-ups that need to take place. Enjoy your break and help us help the kids get into the mindset of testing when you return!
Respectfully,
Julie Frugo

Multicultural Festival
Peace Rally / 4th Annual Walk for Hope
Respect, Responsibility, Caring

SLCS is focused on integrating our core ethical values of respect, responsibility and caring into everything we do. Our Multicultural Festival will be held on Friday, May 25th and will kickoff with a cultural fashion show and rally at 9AM. This year there will be approximately 26 different booths for students to explore and make cultural connections, a fashion show representing traditional fashions from around the world, performances, exciting food and many opportunities for our students to participate and make community connections. From 9:30 to 12:30 booths will be open for grades 4-7 and from 12:30 to 3PM booths will be open for grades Kindergarten through 3. Students also will walk with their grade levels throughout the day as a part of our annual Walk for Hope for another great day of character building!

We are very excited about our upcoming event featuring our panel of experts on high schools in St. Louis. This event will be May 23rd at the History Museum and open to our parents of 6th and 7th graders. We anticipate each high school presenting their process for application, helpful hints to parents, financial aid if necessary and timeline of this process.
